My second year in care, I was now 7 years old, and in year two at school, this blog is about the things that I can remember and were significant to me from that year.
This was the year I call all change. I was still at my old school, but from where I was now living it was a long journey mainly because of the road works that were taking place on the route we had to take. It was agreed at the time by all the people in my life that I would be better off with a fresh start this included a new school which was local to where I lived. I moved school’s just after February half term, I can remember the children at my old school made cards for me, which I still have in my life story work. My new school was a smaller school with less pupils. I can’t really remember how I was feeling but I imagine I must have been anxious. I made some new friends and for the first time I had a best friend, I used to go to play dates at her house and she came to mine, it was fun times. I was really settling into my new home & I can remember having a new bed it was a captain’s bunk, and I loved it. I had lots of toys, and we had flash cards on my wardrobe doors this helped me communicate as I preferred not to talk. I had lots of help at home and school, I had a teaching assistant who was with me every day, this helped me with my communication and my feelings. My schoolwork was always very good (or so I was told) I had a reading age of a 14 year old, I loved reading and still do. I can remember feeling settled at home and at school, my teacher was brilliant and if I didn’t want to go out at break and lunchtimes because my foster carer knew that unstructured times of the day I struggled to cope, I was allowed to stay in and read and just go out for a walk with an adult. One thing that I can remember was making a decision that would change my life and in my opinion for the better. I had, had a bad day at school and hidden under the teacher’s desk, when I was asked what was wrong, I screamed at my teacher its contact day, she told my foster carer when I got in the car I started punching and clawing at my eyes because I did want to go, my foster carer pulled the car over made some calls, I didn’t have to go, I can remember feeling happy and we went swimming.
I went on holiday for the first time we went to Cornwall, I had a dinghy and played with other children, while my foster carers pulled the dinghy round in the sea. My birthday this year I had a party, all of my class were invited, and I had a magician, I had lots of presents and a big birthday cake. I was also spoiled at Christmas with lots of presents, I can remember thinking life was great.
