The year is 2021, I am 13 years old and in year 9 at school. Covid was still lingering on and 2021 was what I like to call it the year of the mask. I had to wear one on the bus, in school except lessons our desks were pushed further apart, when we went shopping and in any public area. I can remember admiring some people as they used their masks as a way of advertising their businesses. I had an entire range of different masks because I have sensory issues it was a struggle to find the right one, but we got there in the end. We all contracted covid at home, but our symptoms were not too bad. Then lockdown came again in January, we went into the same routine as before, I worked it out since starting my secondary school and according to reports over one school calendar year 110 classroom days were lost, I spent more time in lockdown that I did at school, I did not mind, and I loved the schedule my foster mum had done. Working from home was great but I can remember thinking that some families would find it really hard especially if there were a lot of children. I continued having FaceTime and telephone contact with my birth family they had also all had covid and my youngest sister was quite poorly with it, but she bounced back I also had FaceTime and telephone calls with my social worker so I was kept in the loop with everything that was happening. By the summer of 2021 thankfully things were starting to get back to normal.

Another memory of this year was I experienced death in my foster family, my foster mum’s mum died at the grand age of 96, she was a really kind lady, and I had a wonderful relationship with her, she treated me like a grandson, I can remember feeling sad but I am aware because of my diagnosis of Asperger’s I struggle to show that emotion, but I do feel it inside I just can’t express it.

Other memories from 2021 I had another great report from school and was enjoying all my subjects except art and I remember thinking this will definitely be a subject I drop when I do my options next year. I had a lovely birthday and officially became a teenager, we all went out for a meal, I chose an Italian restaurant, my favourite food except for my foster mum’s roast dinner.
