The year is 2018, I am 10 years old and approaching my final year of primary school. My memories from this year are –
I am really settled at home, and I love being part of this family. I have positive role models which helped me so much. Contact with my birth family is going well, we meet up once a month for breakfast or lunch this lasted for about 2 hours which was enough for me, sometimes it only lasted an hour it really depended on how I was feeling, but the good thing is I was listened to by my social worker when I explained I would like separate contact with my mum and sisters. So I would see my mum one month then my sisters the following months.
School was going great I had amazing teacher in year 5 (Miss Clarke) who turned things round for me and I was really loving going to school. We were looking at secondary schools and although I passed my 11+ the schools which I could have gone to did not have the correct support in place that I would need due to my diagnosis, I didn’t need support educationally but I did need emotional support, so after visiting 3 different schools I chose a local one which some of my friends were going to. Exciting times ahead.
This year we went to Spain on holiday, which I loved in fact I love travelling and experiencing different cultures, but at the time it was just a holiday, I went on a jet ski I can remember thinking this was really fast, but looking back it wasn’t. I visited London for the first time, I loved the train journey, but I fell to sleep on the way, we did the Shrek Adventure which was very exciting, I saw the Houses of Parliament, number 10 Downing Street, West minister abbey and lots of sights, I had my photo taken with a policeman who was guarding the Houses of Parliament and he let me wear his helmet, I have some amazing pictures of that day and made some amazing happy memories.
We had a huge above ground swimming pool at home, which my friend and I spent most of the summer in, my foster carer used to bring pizza and pop out to us. I won an award at the Coventry foster children’s night for my school achievements. This is the year I went away to the Isle of Wight with school on a residential trip for a week, it was fun but I missed home, we did so many things, like abseiling, canoeing, rope course, orienteering and nature walks, but the one thing I remember about this trip was my foster carer crying when the coach left the school then I realised I was really loved, she tried to hide it but I saw she was crying. I suppose my ultimate memory of this year was going to the WWE wrestling I used to be such a fan, I had the wrestling ring and most of the wrestler’s figures, I was in awe. It’s funny the things you remember, but most of all I remember, happy fun times, great memories, and being safe and cared for.
