What is self reflection? To me, it is the ability to evaluate one’s cognitive, emotional, and behavioural process. Self reflection is important for everyone but as looked after children it is really important for us to understand how to self reflect and why it is important. If we do not self reflect, we would simply go through life moving from one thing to the next without pausing to think and analyse what we want, what is going well and what is not going well.
Some questions we may ask ourselves;
What am I doing here? – Think about the journey we have been on. Take the negatives and the positive and understand as children and young people our past is not our fault. It was probably was an exhausting, stressful, and frightening journey, and we felt completely lost and alone. So be kind to yourself and take time to process your new life.
Where do I want to go? – Take time to think about what your goal is and what are you working for. Set yourself small goals to ensure you achieve them.
What do I need to get to the next step? – Think about what you will need to achieve your end goal. Write down what will help you to accomplish this.
Who would I like with me on my journey? – Think about who is in your life, who are your mentors? Can your peers help you? Who has always stood by you? Choose the right people this can make all the difference in achieving what you want.
Am I on the right path and do I want to continue on this path? – This is a really hard question, so take some time to think this through and if you feel that moving forward on your chosen path is right, work hard to achieve your end goal or if you feel it is not the right path then there is no shame in setting yourself a fresh set of goals.
Try writing a journal, write down your thoughts, feelings, and experiences that you have experienced and shaped you so far and do not forget to include what has happened to you and never loose site on what you want to achieve.
Remember keep moving forward.
